“The action is fast-paced and non-stop...factual content is accurate. The period of time and the DP camps after the war are not often treated for this audience...the story will hold readers.” School Library Journal.

"For the Young Adult with a special interest in the subject" VOYA Magazine

Autumn, 1945. Europe is teeming with refugees, and Displaced Persons camps have been set up as temporary shelters for the refugees on their way home. Many of the Jews of Europe are the sole survivors of their families. Most of this “Saved Remnant” live with the hope of settling in Palestine, their ancient homeland, the Biblical Land of Israel. Although America’s President Truman supported the return of the displaced Jewish people to Palestine, the British, who governed the country, allowed in only a fraction of those yearning to enter. Many illegal Jewish transports tried to get there by any means possible, including Jewish underground organizations. And sometimes, illegal Nazi transports enroute out of Germany and illegal Jewish transports spent the night under the same inn’s roof without knowing of each other's presence.
Thirteen-year-old Hella desperately wants to find her father—her only relative who might possibly have survived the Holocaust—and to make a new life in Palestine. She hasn’t seen him since she was a young child.
The “miracle” meeting of the two in a displaced persons camp in Germany soon turns into a bone-chilling drama when on their way to Palestine Hella discovers the man to be an impostor, worse, a Nazi, who is using her as a prop for his own escape from Europe.
Terror soon takes the place of sorrow in her heart when she realizes her position. Desperate, she sneaks away to attempt to find a group of friends she saw in the area earlier and travel with them. They are part of the Jewish underground.
But now she is hunted. Only her death will keep her “father’s” secret...and the impostor well-knows her limited means of escape!

Felice Buckvar is a New York resident.
