Kathy Fountain was an orphan, born in 1758. She faced harsh circumstances in a country yet to be named that was populated by denizens who called themselves Americans when they united to fight for their independence. Nothing remains of the farmhouse where Kathy passed the first dozen or so years of her life; neither is there a trace remaining of the orphanage where she was sheltered when she was sixteen.

It was discovered that Kathy had the attributes of a spy: good-looking, sharp-witted, employed at an inn where she could overhear many conversations. She was also committed to the patriot cause. During the war her situation became more perilous, but her dedication to freedom never wavered as the danger increased.
